WHO WPRO Visits RS Marzoeki Mahdi to Strengthen Mental Health and Addiction Services

BOGOR – The World Health Organization Western Pacific Regional Office (WHO WPRO) conducted a visit to RS Marzoeki Mahdi, Bogor, on Thursday (2/10/2025), as part of its mission to enhance mental health and addiction services in Indonesia.

The visit was part of WHO WPRO’s mission to Indonesia taking place from September 29 to October 3, 2025. WHO was represented by Dr. Jasmine Vergara, Technical Officer, along with delegates from WHO Indonesia, the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs (Kemenko PMK), the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Social Affairs, and the Bogor City Health Office.

RS Marzoeki Mahdi President Director, Dr. Nova Riyanti Yusuf, MD, Ph.D, led a presentation and discussion on deinstitutionalization, guardianship, and community-based case management (SCM). The delegation also visited the stabilized psychiatric inpatient ward and both substance and non-substance addiction rehabilitation facilities.

The WHO WPRO mission aims to deepen understanding of Indonesia’s mental health programs, including suicide prevention and service governance, while identifying ways to strengthen and expand community-based models and provide input for national planning.

According to Dr. Nova, the visit is an essential step in WHO’s support for mental health development in Indonesia.

“They want to directly observe the services, from community health centers to psychiatric hospitals. From today’s visit, they mentioned that we are already on the right track and quite advanced. This means the transformation of mental health services has been progressing well, both outside and within hospitals,” she explained.

She added that the upcoming evaluation results will guide the next steps.

“We will wait for their evaluation. Moving forward, there may be opportunities for collaboration, training, or other forms of support,” Dr. Nova stated.
